Find West Virginia mugshots and jail records at the right source
Use the state’s current corrections search for regional-jail bookings and inmate records, then West Virginia court records for charges and case outcomes. This guide covers all 55 counties without pretending there is one live statewide mugshot gallery.
Records Search
Court, Criminal, Marriage, Divorce, Property
For WV mugshots, jail bookings or offender information, your best starting point is the West Virginia Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation (WV DCR). Its official search hub separates Daily Incarcerations, jail offender records and prison offender records. Each answers a different question.
West Virginia’s regional jail system serves all 55 counties through ten regional facilities. The name WVRJA still appears in searches, but it refers to the older Regional Jail and Correctional Facility Authority. The consolidated WV DCR became the current agency on July 1, 2018. If you remember the old WVRJA mugshot search, use the state’s current DCR links instead.
Arrest is not conviction. An offender listing or booking photo documents an arrest or custody event, not guilt, final charges, a sentence or the end of a court case. WV DCR data can change quickly; a matching name alone does not confirm identity.
Which West Virginia search should you open?
People search “West Virginia mugshots,” “WVRJA daily incarcerations” and “regional jail inmate search” as though they refer to the same record. They do not. Choose the tool based on the exact question.
| What you need | Official starting point | What it cannot prove |
|---|---|---|
| Who was admitted to a regional jail on a recent date? | WV DCR Daily Incarcerations | That the person remains in custody now |
| Is a named adult in a regional jail? | WV DCR Offender Search (Jails) | Guilt or a final court disposition |
| Was someone moved into a state prison? | WV DCR Offender Search (Prisons) | Complete historical county arrests |
| What happened to a misdemeanor or preliminary felony case? | WV Magistrate Record Search | That every court document is available online |
| What is the status of a circuit-court criminal case? | WV Judiciary Circuit Court access | That a jail photo accurately describes the case outcome |
| Do you need the actual arrest report or a photo not posted online? | The law-enforcement or corrections agency that holds the record | That a photograph must legally be released |
The West Virginia Judiciary’s court-record landing page includes separate statewide Magistrate and Circuit Court options. An initial arrest may generate a magistrate record, while a felony prosecution may proceed in circuit court. Searching only one system can miss the later stage.
How to look up a WV jail booking or mugshot
- Identify the arrest county and approximate date.
Use the county where the arrest or court case occurred. The person may live in another county. If you only know a city, identify its county before choosing a regional facility.
- Open the official WV DCR search hub.
Visit the WV DCR offender-search page. The state lists Daily Incarcerations, Offender Search (Jails) and Offender Search (Prisons) separately. You should not need a paid third-party lookup to reach this page.
- Choose recent admission or individual custody.
For a date-specific booking, select Daily Incarcerations. For one person’s regional-jail record, select Offender Search (Jails). The prison option is intended for state-prison records, not an all-purpose mugshot archive.
- Search the date, facility or name that applies.
The daily system may use a date or institution listing; the jail offender tool is designed for person-specific searches. Use identifiers displayed by the official site rather than inventing filters that do not exist.
- Check the exact result before treating it as a match.
Compare the reported name, booking or offender identifier, admission information and facility where available. Do not use a photo or common name alone to identify someone.
- Confirm custody changes and criminal-case status.
A person may be released, transferred or processed into a different facility. Recheck the current DCR search; then use West Virginia court records for filed charges, hearings and final disposition.
If a government search displays an error, requires a CAPTCHA or does not open inside an embedded browser, return to the WV DCR homepage and follow its current search links. The official tools may use session controls; this page does not claim to perform a live inmate search.
Recent West Virginia mugshots and daily incarcerations
The WV DCR Daily Incarcerations option is most relevant when someone asks who was admitted to a regional jail on a particular day. It is different from an individual jail offender search. West Virginia’s official daily records may identify institutions and admissions for a selected date, but a person appearing in an older report might already have been released.
Searching today’s or yesterday’s bookings
Use the date-based daily search at the official DCR portal. Look for the correct institution rather than assuming an arrest in a particular county always means the person is still held at its usual regional jail. Bookings and public entries may not appear instantly after arrest.
Looking for a person booked last week
Start with the jail offender search when the name is known. If you need the date of admission, check the daily option for the dates that matter. A daily snapshot does not replace a complete historical arrest archive, and a current jail search can change after release or transfer.
Is a booking photograph always displayed?
No. The availability of a mugshot depends on the record and state disclosure practices. Some available custody records include an offender photo; other searches may provide identifiers and booking information without an image. Never substitute a cropped or copied image from an unverified directory as proof of identity.
For the broader difference between daily reports, live rosters and older bookings, see our recently booked mugshots guide. For WV-specific legacy search terminology, the WVRJA mugshots guide explains how the older system name connects to today’s WV DCR tools.
Which West Virginia regional jail serves your county?
The WV DCR history page describes ten regional jails serving West Virginia’s 55 counties. The county-to-facility assignments below come from the state’s individual facility pages. Treat them as a starting point, not a guarantee that someone remains in the listed building: transport, temporary housing and transfers can change the actual location.
| Regional jail / location | Counties served | Main phone |
|---|---|---|
| Central Regional Jail Sutton · 1255 Dyer Hill Road |
Braxton, Calhoun, Clay, Gilmer, Lewis, Nicholas, Roane, Webster | 304-765-7904 |
| Eastern Regional Jail Martinsburg · 94 Grapevine Road |
Berkeley, Jefferson, Morgan | 304-267-0045 |
| North Central Regional Jail Greenwood · 1 Lois Lane |
Doddridge, Harrison, Marion, Monongalia, Pleasants, Ritchie, Wirt, Wood | 304-873-1384 |
| Northern Regional Jail Moundsville · 112 Northern Regional Correction Drive |
Brooke, Hancock, Marshall, Ohio, Tyler, Wetzel | 304-843-4067 |
| Potomac Highlands Regional Jail Augusta · 355 Dolan Drive |
Grant, Hampshire, Hardy, Mineral, Pendleton | 304-496-1275 |
| South Central Regional Jail Charleston · 1001 Centre Way |
Jackson, Kanawha | 304-558-1336 |
| Southern Regional Jail Beaver · 1200 Airport Road |
Fayette, Greenbrier, Mercer, Monroe, Raleigh, Summers, Wyoming | 304-256-6726 |
| Southwestern Regional Jail Holden · 1300 Gaston Caperton Drive |
Boone, Logan, McDowell, Mingo | 304-239-3032 |
| Tygart Valley Regional Jail Belington · 400 Abbey Road |
Barbour, Pocahontas, Preston, Randolph, Taylor, Tucker, Upshur | 304-637-0382 |
| Western Regional Jail Barboursville · One O’Hanlon Place |
Cabell, Lincoln, Mason, Putnam, Wayne | 304-733-6821 |
Two names often confused: Southern Regional Jail (SRJ) is in Beaver and serves the Beckley-area counties listed above. Southwestern Regional Jail (SWRJ) is in Holden and serves Boone, Logan, McDowell and Mingo. North Central Regional Jail is not the same as Northern Regional Jail.
Facility phone numbers are for facility-related questions, not guaranteed public mugshot request lines. For the most current inmate status, search DCR first. Use the specific official facility page for address, visitor instructions and any schedule changes before traveling.
How to check West Virginia criminal court records after an arrest
Regional jail records and court records serve different purposes. A jail record may show an admission or an allegation at intake. The court is the proper source to verify filed charges, hearings, case status, dismissal, acquittal or conviction where public records are available.
Magistrate court cases
Use the official Magistrate Record Search, which is free and covers magistrate cases from all 55 counties. The Judiciary says a user may search a first or last name or case number, and the system can return up to 30 records. It provides case information, not the underlying court documents. To obtain documents, contact the magistrate court clerk in the county where the matter was filed; lawful copy fees may apply.
Circuit court cases
West Virginia Circuit Courts handle felonies and other matters within their jurisdiction. The Judiciary’s statewide Court Record Access page links the circuit-court system, covering all 55 counties. Circuit document downloads may require user registration and fees. Search the case county rather than the county in which the jail happens to be located.
Finding a court clerk
Open the West Virginia Judiciary public information page and choose Court Information by County. This is the more appropriate contact route for a certified disposition, a case copy or a question that cannot be settled by an online search.
Example: A person may be booked in a regional jail that serves several counties. The appropriate criminal court is generally tied to the county where the alleged offense was prosecuted, not automatically the physical county of the regional jail.
Need a booking photo or arrest report not available online?
Start with the agency that created or maintains the actual record. The WV DCR holds correctional custody information. The arresting sheriff, municipal police department or West Virginia State Police may hold the original incident or arrest report. A court clerk holds court filings.
- Find the correct records custodian.
Use the arresting agency or DCR according to the record type. The WV Secretary of State’s FOIA guidance expressly says requests for records held by another agency must go directly to that agency.
- Describe what you need precisely.
Identify the person where appropriate, county, approximate booking or arrest date, incident number if known and whether you seek a mugshot, arrest report, custody record or certified court record.
- Use the authority’s actual request instructions.
For State Police records, the WVSP Forms page lists a criminal/crash report request and a separate criminal-history challenge form. For other agencies, use their public-records contact or request portal.
- Understand timing and potential cost.
Under W. Va. Code §29B-1-3, a custodian ordinarily must respond as soon as practicable, within five days excluding weekends and legal holidays, by providing records, arranging inspection or issuing a written denial. This is a response requirement, not a promise that every photo will be released. Actual reproduction costs may be charged, but the statute prohibits search or retrieval charges based on labor time.
- Review the response or follow up with the proper office.
Exceptions can apply to protected records. If the agency does not hold the material, identify the correct custodian. For a denial, read the written explanation and the statute’s review process instead of assuming a general directory can release the record.
What about a formal criminal-history background check?
A public jail search is not a certified criminal-history report. The West Virginia State Police Criminal Records Section describes fingerprint-based background checks and authorization requirements. Its guidance directs applicants to IdentoGO for fingerprint appointments. Do not assume that an online mugshot listing is acceptable for licensing, hiring or other regulated decisions.
What if the case was expunged?
The State Police page describes an expungement process involving the appropriate Circuit Court. Availability and eligibility depend on the case and West Virginia law. If a public record appears inaccurate or restricted, use the court or record holder’s correction procedure; this independent website cannot change official data.
No WV mugshot or jail result? Try the next source
| Problem | Likely explanation | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Name absent from today’s daily list | Booking happened on another date, or intake has not appeared yet. | Use jail offender search or check the appropriate date and institution. |
| An older booking shows a different jail | Transfer or a change in custody location. | Recheck the statewide DCR jail and prison searches. |
| Released person not found in a current list | Current-custody systems do not function as permanent criminal histories. | Search magistrate or circuit court records, then the arresting agency. |
| Result lists an arrest but no photograph | The source does not publish that image or disclosure is restricted. | Review the records-request instructions of the proper custodian. |
| Common name returns multiple people | Different people share a name, or the record uses a variation. | Compare official case or booking identifiers before drawing conclusions. |
| Search portal will not load | Browser session, CAPTCHA, maintenance or access limitations. | Start again through the official DCR or Judiciary parent page. |
Do not search an unverified third-party photo archive as a replacement for a missing government record. A stale image may continue circulating even after release, case dismissal or a court order affecting record access.
Use West Virginia VINE for custody-status notifications
When your concern is a change in custody status rather than a booking photograph, WV DCR’s Victim Information and Notification Everyday (VINE) service provides a more relevant route. It lets crime victims obtain custody information and register for automated notification of qualifying changes.
The official VINE page lists 1-866-WV4-VINE and online registration at VINELink. It also explains that notification of a transfer may occur when the person reaches the receiving facility rather than when the transfer first begins. VINE is not a mugshot gallery or substitute for emergency assistance.
If urgent safety information is needed, contact the appropriate public-safety agency directly. Do not rely on an older public offender page for time-sensitive location or release status.
WV mugshots and inmate-search FAQs
Where is the official WV mugshots search?
Use WV DCR Offender Search. Choose Daily Incarcerations for recent admissions or Offender Search (Jails) for an individual’s regional-jail record. A photo is not guaranteed in every public result.
Does WVRJA still operate West Virginia regional jails?
WVRJA is a legacy name for the former Regional Jail and Correctional Facility Authority. West Virginia consolidated corrections agencies into WV DCR on July 1, 2018. Current searches should begin on the DCR website.
Can I search today’s West Virginia jail bookings?
WV DCR links a Daily Incarcerations service for date-based regional-jail admission information. Processing and publication timing can affect what appears. It is not the same as a list of everyone currently in custody.
Are WV mugshot and inmate searches free?
The state provides public online search routes for corrections information, and the Judiciary’s magistrate case search is free. Copies, formal records requests and some court document downloads may involve fees.
How many regional jails are in West Virginia?
WV DCR describes ten regional jails serving the state’s 55 counties. Its adult facilities listing also includes correctional centers and prisons that should not be confused with those ten regional jails.
Does Southern Regional Jail serve Charleston?
Not as its usual service county. Charleston is in Kanawha County, which the state’s official facility list assigns to South Central Regional Jail. Southern Regional Jail is in Beaver and serves seven southeastern counties.
Are Southern and Southwestern Regional Jails the same?
No. Southern Regional Jail is located in Beaver, while Southwestern Regional Jail is located in Holden. They have different service areas and phone numbers.
Can a released inmate still have a court case?
Yes. Release from a regional jail does not establish that a charge or case has ended. Check West Virginia Judiciary’s Magistrate and Circuit Court records to understand the proceedings and disposition.
Does a WV mugshot mean someone was convicted?
No. An arrest, booking photo or inmate listing does not by itself establish guilt or conviction. Verify the case in the appropriate court.
How can I obtain a copy of a magistrate court document?
The Judiciary’s online Magistrate Record Search shows case information, not copies of filed documents. Contact the magistrate clerk in the county where the case was filed. The clerk may charge a legally required copy fee.
What if the DCR search does not show a booking photograph?
The system may not publish that image, or access may be restricted. Contact the appropriate record custodian using the agency’s official instructions; an image’s absence does not necessarily mean a booking record does not exist.
How long does a West Virginia public-records request take?
Under W. Va. Code §29B-1-3, the custodian ordinarily has up to five days, excluding weekends and legal holidays, to furnish records, arrange inspection or provide a written denial. That is not a guarantee that the requested image is public or that the entire matter will be resolved immediately.
