Charlotte Mugshots: Find Arrest Photos and Booking Records
For Charlotte NC mugshots, start with Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office Arrest Inquiry. If you need to know whether someone is in jail now, use the separate Inmate Inquiry. Both are free public search pages, not services operated by this website.
Records Search
Court, Criminal, Marriage, Divorce, Property
Charlotte mugshots are not kept in a separate citywide photo gallery. The Sheriff’s Arrest Processing Center handles booking for people arrested in Mecklenburg County by law-enforcement agencies, including Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police. The Sheriff provides a public Arrest Inquiry that may display a booking photograph, arrest date and charge information. A picture or listed charge is not a conviction.
Choose the search that matches your question. Someone who has been released may still appear in arrest history but not in an active-custody result. For what happened later in court, use North Carolina’s judicial records.
Which Charlotte arrest or mugshot search should you use?
Charlotte, Mecklenburg County jail, Charlotte police and the state court system do not maintain identical records. One incident can appear in several systems, each describing a different part of the process.
| What you need | Source | What you may find |
|---|---|---|
| Mugshot or arrest booking | MCSO Arrest Inquiry | Arrest date, arrest number, charges and a photo when available. |
| Current jail custody | MCSO Inmate Inquiry | Active status, JID/PID, detention and charge details. |
| Police incident report | CMPD Records | Incident documentation; not a standalone jail mugshot archive. |
| Court date or disposition | NC eCourts / Mecklenburg Clerk | Public case activity, scheduled hearings and available filings. |
| State prison record | NC Adult Correction | State prisoners, probationers and parolees; not county jail inmates. |
The arrest record is usually the most direct route when your search is specifically for a Charlotte booking photograph. Use Inmate Inquiry for custody questions and a court search for the later legal outcome. For a more detailed custody walkthrough, see our Charlotte NC Inmate Inquiry guide.
How to find Charlotte mugshots in the official arrest search
The Mecklenburg County Sheriff publishes an Arrest Inquiry with fields for last name, first name, arrest date, PID and arrest number. You do not have to know every field. In fact, the portal warns that too many search criteria may produce an error.
- Open MCSO Arrest Inquiry.
Use the government-hosted arrest portal linked above. If you start from the main Sheriff website, follow its Resident Inquiry information to the arrest search.
- Enter a last name and, when useful, a first name.
Use the legal spelling you know. When an arrest number or PID is available, search by that known identifier rather than guessing other details.
- Use an arrest date if needed.
For a recent booking or common surname, a known approximate date helps narrow results. If the search becomes too restrictive, remove unnecessary fields.
- Open the correct arrest record.
Compare the arrest number, date and lawful identifying fields. The portal may show a mugshot and charge information. Do not identify someone from a common name or similar appearance alone.
- Check the record’s limits.
A booking charge is an allegation at that stage. It can change during prosecution. Use the court docket to verify formal charges and case disposition.
Different official-page dates: An MCSO Arrest Processing page retains an older notice about arrest/warrant data access after July 17, 2022. The separate current government search portal presently offers Arrest Inquiry and Inmate Inquiry. Use the current portal, and check eCourts or contact the Sheriff if a search fails. Unserved warrants are not a public name-search service.
Where does the Charlotte booking photo come from?
The Sheriff’s Arrest Processing Center at 801 East Fourth Street operates around the clock and uses electronic fingerprints and digital booking photography. It is the centralized processing point for people arrested in Mecklenburg County by participating law-enforcement agencies.
When a photo is available, it may appear in the corresponding arrest or inmate record. The MCSO Inmate Inquiry FAQ describes saving a visible photograph through the browser’s image-save feature. Do not assume every arrest has a public photo, and do not use a downloaded photo without confirming the record and its context.
Understanding identifiers on the page
- PID — Positive Identification Number: a person-level number associated with fingerprint identification, which ordinarily remains the same through separate stays.
- JID — Jail Identification Number: a jail-stay number assigned at booking; a later stay can have a different JID.
- Arrest number: identifies a particular arrest entry and can help narrow the arrest lookup.
- Case number: identifies a court matter; it does not always match an arrest or jail number.
These distinctions matter when multiple bookings share a name, or when one person has more than one arrest entry. A current jail record, an old booking photo and a later court disposition may describe different times.
Charlotte mugshots today, recent arrests and older records
Arrests from today or yesterday
Search MCSO Arrest Inquiry for the arrest date. If you need present custody, switch to Inmate Inquiry and use the Actives Only filter. A recent arrest can take time to complete processing; a person can also be released before you check the roster. Neither situation proves that the arrest did not occur.
Last seven days, 30 days or a prior booking
Use the date or a known arrest number in Arrest Inquiry. The current Sheriff search gateway describes arrest and inmate records from the past three years, and its FAQ confirms that three-year online data window. This is not a guarantee that every older record or photo is public, or that the agency destroys its underlying files after three years.
What if someone has already been released?
An active-only inmate search may no longer return the person. Remove the active filter or check Arrest Inquiry for the arrest event. If you need to check release or transfer status directly, MCSO’s detention information provides a general line at 704-336-8100 and a VINE information line at 1-800-247-9658.
If you are researching booking trends rather than one Charlotte event, our recent mugshots and bookings guide explains why daily arrest logs and active jail rosters produce different results.
How to check Charlotte charges, court dates and case outcomes
A mugshot and arrest entry show an intake event, not a final verdict. Mecklenburg County has used North Carolina eCourts since October 9, 2023. The NC eCourts service gives access to public case information and available filings. The public Portal is not the certified court record.
Search with the court case number when known, or use a party name and compare details carefully. Look for later court events, charge changes, hearings or disposition. For official records, certified copies or questions about missing documents, contact the Mecklenburg County Clerk of Superior Court.
Need an official certified criminal-record search?
The North Carolina Judicial Branch offers a certified name-based search for one county through the Clerk using Form AOC-CR-314. The currently published fee is $25. Mail submissions use a money order or certified check; the Clerk’s instructions also identify accepted in-person payment methods. This is different from freely viewing a jail mugshot or searching online court docket entries.
See the official NC criminal-background-check instructions before requesting a certified search. Court self-service terminals may provide non-certified viewing without a search fee; copies can cost extra.
Police incident reports are separate
If Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department handled the incident, CMPD’s Records Division provides crime incident reports at no charge through specified channels. Its office is at 601 East Trade Street. CMPD says it no longer provides local arrest-history reports and directs those requests to the Clerk of Court. A CMPD incident report does not automatically contain the Sheriff’s booking photo.
How to request a Charlotte mugshot or arrest record not shown online
If a photo does not appear in the portal, do not assume a paid private mugshot website has more authoritative information. Determine who created or maintains the record and follow that agency’s request process. Some records are restricted or not releasable.
- For booking photographs or Sheriff records: open the MCSO Public Information Manager page. It provides the official Public Information Request form and submission instructions.
- Describe the event: include the person’s name if known, an arrest or booking number, location, record type and approximate date range. Avoid unnecessary private identifiers.
- Submit the form through the agency’s stated contact: use the email and instructions on the official page. The form references a 3–5 business-day approval process, not a guaranteed delivery deadline for every request.
- For a CMPD incident report: use the CMPD records and media resources or the city’s public-records portal rather than the Sheriff’s booking request route.
- For an official court file: use North Carolina eCourts or request a copy from the Mecklenburg Clerk. Older documents may need a Clerk request if not available online.
Can a Charlotte mugshot be removed?
MCSO states that its online arrest and inmate inquiry information generally remains available for three years from arrest or release, and earlier removal from its system requires a signed judicial Order of Expunction. This does not mean every charge qualifies, nor does it imply automatic removal from every other site.
Read the NC Judicial Branch expunction guidance for eligibility rules, different procedures, possible fees and forms. An expunction request is a legal process, not a paid image-removal service.
Why isn’t a Charlotte mugshot showing up?
| Problem | What to try |
|---|---|
| No name match | Confirm spelling and county. Search one known identifier or a simpler name; avoid filling too many fields. |
| More than 500 matches | Use a verified first name, arrest date, PID or arrest number to narrow results. |
| Person no longer active | Try Arrest Inquiry or remove the active-only inmate filter; a previous arrest is not current custody. |
| Record older than three years | Use the appropriate court or agency’s public-records process. The online window is limited. |
| Photo is absent | Check whether the agency publishes it. Ask MCSO about a releasable booking image; no result guarantees disclosure. |
| Person moved to state custody | Search NC Department of Adult Correction; that system excludes local county-jail records. |
| Portal error or blocked network | Retry with fewer fields, use the Sheriff inquiry landing page or contact the responsible agency. MCSO notes some local firewalls can interfere. |
Identity and fairness: A booking photograph is not proof of guilt. Do not assume a same-name match identifies the correct person or rely on an arrest entry for employment, housing, credit or other regulated screening decisions. This independent guide is not a consumer reporting agency.

Charlotte mugshots NC: frequently asked questions
Where do I find Charlotte NC mugshots?
Start with the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office Arrest Inquiry for local arrest records and available mugshots. The separate Inmate Inquiry is designed for current and recent detention.
Is Charlotte mugshot search free?
Viewing the Sheriff’s public arrest and inmate search pages does not require a payment. Official copies, certified searches or other records processes may involve fees.
Does Charlotte have a separate police mugshot database?
The Sheriff’s Arrest Processing Center handles county booking and its public inquiry is the direct starting point for booking photos. CMPD maintains police incident reports, a different type of record.
How do I search Charlotte mugshots from today?
Use Arrest Inquiry and narrow by arrest date if known. If your question is present custody, use Inmate Inquiry with Actives Only. Public information may lag processing or change after release.
Can I find Charlotte mugshots from more than three years ago?
MCSO describes its online arrest and inmate inquiry window as three years. Older underlying records may follow different retention or disclosure rules; ask the relevant agency or Clerk instead of assuming the online archive is complete.
What is the difference between a PID and JID?
According to the Sheriff’s inmate FAQ, PID is a person-level fingerprint identification number, while JID identifies a particular jail stay and can change with a later booking.
What if the name returns no results?
Check spelling, remove unnecessary fields, confirm the arrest occurred in Mecklenburg County and search by a known identifier. For older or transferred cases, use the court or state corrections search.
Does a Charlotte mugshot mean someone was convicted?
No. The Sheriff explicitly warns against confusing an arrest charge with a conviction. Verify court proceedings and final disposition through North Carolina court records.
Where can I find a Mecklenburg County inmate who was released?
Try the broader inmate history or Arrest Inquiry rather than Actives Only. For custody notification and related guidance, see the Sheriff’s detention page and VINE information.
Can I request a Charlotte booking photo that is not online?
Use the Sheriff’s Public Information Request process to ask whether a responsive booking photo can be released. Availability depends on the record and applicable restrictions.
How much does a certified Mecklenburg criminal-record check cost?
The North Carolina Judicial Branch lists $25 for a certified, name-based single-county criminal-record search through the Clerk of Superior Court using Form AOC-CR-314.
How can I remove a Charlotte arrest record from the online search?
MCSO says early removal from its online inquiry requires a judicial Order of Expunction. Eligibility and procedures vary; consult the North Carolina Judicial Branch’s expunction guidance.
