Find Atlanta Arrest, Booking and Jail Records Through the Correct Official System
There is no single official “Atlanta mugshots” database covering every arrest in the city. Atlanta lies in both Fulton and DeKalb counties, and the correct record source depends on where the person was booked, which agency made the arrest, whether the person is still in custody, and whether you need a booking record or the later court case.
Records Search
Court, Criminal, Marriage, Divorce, Property
For most recent state-law arrests, start with the appropriate county jail system. Use Atlanta Police records for incident or arrest reports, the city detention center for detainees held by the City of Atlanta, Georgia Department of Corrections for state-prison custody, and the court system when you need the case outcome rather than the original booking allegation.
Where should you search first?
If the arrest involved an ordinary state offense in Atlanta, first identify whether the booking went through Fulton County or DeKalb County. Fulton County provides an online inmate database, while DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office provides its own inmate lookup and jail information.
If you need the actual booking photograph rather than current custody information, use the responsible sheriff’s open-records process. Atlanta Police states that its Open Records Unit does not provide mugshots or jail status.
Choose the Record That Answers Your Question
“Atlanta mugshots,” “Atlanta arrests,” “inmate search” and “court records” are related searches, but they do not point to the same government record. Starting with the wrong agency is one of the main reasons people cannot find the information they need.
| Your question | Best starting source | What it can help verify | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|---|
| Is someone in jail now? | Fulton or DeKalb inmate search; Atlanta City Detention Center when city custody applies | Current or recently updated custody information | Final guilt or case outcome |
| Was someone booked recently? | Responsible county jail or detention system | Booking, intake, charges or custody fields the agency makes public | Complete criminal history |
| Where can I get the mugshot? | Responsible sheriff’s booking-photo/open-records process | Booking photo when releasable and available | Conviction or disposition |
| What did Atlanta Police report? | Atlanta Police Central Records or Open Records Unit | Incident reports and other APD records subject to disclosure rules | Jail status or mugshot |
| What happened after arrest? | Fulton, DeKalb or Atlanta Municipal Court record | Filed case, hearings and later disposition information where public | Current jail location |
| Was the person transferred to state prison? | Georgia Department of Corrections | State-corrections custody and facility information | Every prior county booking |
| Is this a federal inmate? | Federal Bureau of Prisons | Federal inmate location information from 1982 to present | Ordinary Fulton or DeKalb jail records |
How to Search Atlanta Mugshots and Booking Records Step by Step
Identify the arrest location and likely county
Start with the city address, arrest location or agency name. Atlanta includes territory in Fulton and DeKalb counties, so county identification can determine which jail system to search.
Search the responsible county jail first
Use Fulton County Sheriff’s inmate search for Fulton custody. If the arrest or detention is tied to DeKalb County, use the DeKalb County Sheriff’s inmate lookup instead.
Confirm the person using more than a name
When the official result provides identifiers such as booking number, booking date, age, date of birth, agency or facility, compare them. A name-only match is not enough when several people share the same or a similar name.
Request the booking photo from the custodian when necessary
Fulton and DeKalb provide open-record pathways related to booking photos. Do not send a mugshot request to Atlanta Police merely because APD made the arrest; APD’s Open Records Unit says mugshots are not among the records it provides.
Use the arresting agency for the police report
If Atlanta Police handled the incident, use APD Central Records for a single police report or its Open Records Unit for broader/customized records. Different arresting agencies maintain their own records.
Move to the court record for the case outcome
Use Fulton, DeKalb or Atlanta Municipal Court according to the case. Court records are the better source for later filings, hearings and dispositions than an old booking photo or jail entry.
Fulton County Jail, Inmate Search and Booking Photos
For Atlanta arrests routed into Fulton County custody, the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office is the main starting point. Its public inmate-search page states that the database is updated once per day. That means the system is useful for official verification, but it should not be treated as a second-by-second booking feed.
Fulton inmate database
Use the Sheriff’s inmate search when you know or suspect the person is in Fulton County custody. Search results should be checked against available booking and identifying information.
Fulton open-records request
The Sheriff’s Office directs open-record requests through the Fulton County Records Center. A request for a booking photo requires the agency’s booking-photo release affirmation form to be completed and attached.
Main Jail
Fulton says arrestees arriving at the Main Jail go through property intake, medical screening, fingerprinting, photographing and a warrants check before the booking process is completed.

How quickly does a new Fulton arrest appear?
There can be a delay between arrest, jail intake and what becomes visible through the public database. Fulton specifically describes its inmate database as updating once per day, and intake processing can take longer when the jail is handling a high volume of arrestees or waiting for information from other databases.
For people who do not bond out, Fulton states that first appearance ordinarily occurs within 24 hours of arrest, with weekend arrests generally appearing before a judge on Monday. Treat that as the Sheriff’s stated procedure rather than a guarantee for every individual case.
Fulton booking-photo request costs
Fulton does not publish one flat booking-photo price on the Sheriff’s current open-record page. It states that search, copying and administrative charges may apply, the first 15 minutes are free, standard paper copies are generally $0.10 per page, and an estimated cost will be supplied before records are produced. Because the charge depends on the request, this article does not present a fixed “mugshot fee.”
DeKalb County Jail and Inmate Lookup for Atlanta Arrests
Because part of Atlanta lies in DeKalb County, some Atlanta-area arrest searches belong in the DeKalb system rather than Fulton. The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office manages the jail, inmate lookup, warrants processing and court-security functions for the county.
DeKalb inmate lookup
The Sheriff’s website links to its official inmate lookup. Use it to check detailed inmate information before relying on a reposted booking site or search-engine result.
- Jail
- 4425 Memorial Drive, Decatur, GA 30032
- General jail information

DeKalb open records
The Sheriff’s Open Records page provides a route for requesting documents or booking photos. News organizations have separate booking-photo requirements under Georgia law, so general requesters should use the public open-record instructions rather than the media process.
Atlanta City Detention Center Is a Separate Custody Route
The City of Atlanta still operates the Atlanta City Detention Center through its Department of Corrections. However, the city’s own history of the facility states that responsibility for detaining people arrested on state offenses was transferred to the Fulton and DeKalb county jails in 2003.
That distinction explains why an arrest made inside Atlanta does not automatically mean the person will appear in a City of Atlanta detention database. The city facility continues to operate and the Department of Corrections also supports the Atlanta Municipal Court and other detention functions.

- 254 Peachtree Street SW, Atlanta, GA 30303
- Department phone
- 404-865-8001 or 404-865-8010
- Custody question
- The city advises contacting the facility with the detainee’s name and date of birth.
If City Corrections does not have the person, its public FAQ says the caller may be directed to another facility. In practice, this is another reason to check Fulton or DeKalb when the arrest involved a state-law offense.
Atlanta Police Reports Are Different From Jail and Mugshot Records
An Atlanta Police report can explain the incident or arrest record held by APD, but it is not the same thing as the jail booking. APD maintains both a Central Records Unit and an Open Records Unit, and they handle different types of requests.
Central Records Unit
APD identifies Central Records as the main repository for reports created by Atlanta Police officers. This is the better starting point when you need one police report rather than a broad customized records search.
- Address
- 3493 Donald Lee Hollowell Pkwy NW, Atlanta, GA 30331
- Phone
- 404-546-7461
- Published pickup hours
- Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
Open Records Unit
Use APD Open Records for requests such as customized crime reports, 911 audio, body-camera video, calls-for-service information and other responsive records. The online form asks for details such as case number, incident date or range, time and location.
- Address
- 226 Peachtree Street SW, Atlanta, GA 30303
- Phone
- 404-546-7448

Can Atlanta Police give you a mugshot?
APD’s Open Records Unit specifically lists mugshots and jail status among the information it does not provide. If you need a booking photo, go to the sheriff or jail that holds the booking record rather than sending the same request to APD.
How long does an APD open-record request take?
The online request page says the Open Records Unit will respond within three business days with an estimated completion time and estimated cost. That initial response is not a promise that all requested material will be produced within three days; complex requests, review and lawful redactions can take longer.
APD open-record costs
APD states that a research fee may be based on the lowest-paid full-time employee capable of completing the request. Its published request information also lists $0.10 per page for copies and $1 per disc or tape, with the first 15 minutes of staff time free. Do not prepay an open-record request unless APD sends an invoice or instructions.
Use Atlanta-Area Court Records After the Booking
A jail booking captures an early stage of the criminal process. If your real question is whether prosecutors filed a case, when a hearing is scheduled or how the case ended, move from the booking record into the relevant court system.
Fulton County court records
The Clerk of Superior and Magistrate Courts provides separate search routes for Magistrate/State judicial records and Superior Court records.
DeKalb court docket
DeKalb County’s judicial system includes Superior, State, Magistrate, Juvenile and Probate courts. Use the county’s court-docket route when the case belongs to DeKalb.
Municipal Court of Atlanta
The Municipal Court handles matters including traffic offenses, DUI, ordinance violations and certain limited misdemeanors arising within Atlanta. Its official site provides a Find My Case function.
When to Search Georgia State or Federal Inmate Records
Georgia Department of Corrections
A person sentenced into Georgia state-prison custody may no longer appear where you expect in the original county jail search. Georgia Department of Corrections provides a Find an Offender service that supports searches using information such as name, description, ID or case number.
GDC warns that users should verify information before treating the public search as complete. Its FAQ also notes that some photographs may be unavailable and suggests broader search methods when an offender cannot be located.
Federal Bureau of Prisons
Use the federal inmate locator only when federal custody is relevant. The Bureau of Prisons says its online locator covers federal inmates incarcerated from 1982 to the present and allows searches by name or identifying number.
A result showing “Released” or “Not in BOP Custody” does not necessarily mean every form of criminal-justice supervision has ended. BOP notes that a person may still be under another system or under supervised release.
Atlanta Criminal-History Requests Are Not the Same as Mugshot Searches
A criminal-history record is a broader record product than a current jail search. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says Georgia criminal-history information can include identifying data, arrest data, final judicial disposition information submitted by criminal-justice agencies and certain custodial information.
GBI directs people seeking their Georgia criminal-history record to local sheriffs or police departments for the local agency’s requirements. Atlanta Police provides its own Identification Unit process.
Atlanta Police criminal-history request
APD currently instructs requesters to mail a notarized APD Form 928 Criminal History/Arrest Record Request Form, a photocopy of valid identification and a $10 money order to the Atlanta Police Identification Unit.

Record restriction is a separate process
Georgia uses the term record restriction for certain eligible criminal-history records. GBI explains that the procedure differs depending on when the arrest occurred. For arrests after July 1, 2013, the person generally works through the prosecutor rather than filing the older application process at the arresting agency.
Record restriction is not the same thing as removing a booking image from every website or erasing a court file. Anyone dealing with an old arrest should identify which record is causing the problem before assuming one procedure changes all public records.
Why an Atlanta Arrest May Not Appear in the First Search
| Problem | Possible explanation | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| No Fulton result | The daily database may not have updated, the person may have been released, or DeKalb/city custody may apply. | Check the arrest location, try DeKalb if appropriate, and contact the responsible facility if the matter is urgent. |
| No mugshot shown | The inmate database may not display one, the image may not be publicly posted, or a separate open-record request may be required. | Use the sheriff’s booking-photo or open-record process. |
| Atlanta Police cannot find jail status | APD is the arresting/reporting agency, not necessarily the custody agency. | Search Fulton, DeKalb or City Corrections depending on custody. |
| Person was released | Current-inmate systems are designed around custody and may stop being the best source after release. | Use the arresting agency record and then search the court case. |
| Case is not in county court search | The matter may be municipal, still too new to appear, filed in a different court, or tied to another jurisdiction. | Check the citation, booking data and arresting agency before choosing the court. |
| State prisoner not in county jail | The person may have transferred into Georgia Department of Corrections custody. | Use GDC Find an Offender. |
| Common name gives several matches | Name alone is not enough to establish identity. | Compare booking date, DOB/age, agency, facility, case number or other public identifiers. |
Read the Record, Not Just the Mugshot
A booking photograph can confirm that a photograph was created during an intake process. By itself, it does not tell you whether prosecutors later filed the original charge, whether the case was dismissed, whether the person was acquitted, whether the person pleaded guilty or whether another disposition occurred.
When accuracy matters, use the mugshot only as one piece of the record. Match the booking to the official jail information and then follow the case into the correct court system.
Need a Broader Recent-Booking Search?
If you do not yet know the Atlanta custody agency, the site’s broader recent-booking guide explains how to move from arrest location to jail, booking record, court record and state or federal custody without relying on copied mugshot galleries.
Atlanta Mugshots, Arrests and Jail Records FAQs
Where can I search Atlanta mugshots?
Start with the custody agency rather than a generic mugshot website. Use Fulton County Sheriff’s inmate search for Fulton custody or DeKalb County Sheriff’s inmate lookup for DeKalb. If you specifically need the booking photograph, use the responsible sheriff’s open-records process because an inmate listing may not display every photo.
Does Atlanta have one citywide mugshot database?
No. Atlanta lies in both Fulton and DeKalb counties, and multiple agencies handle arrests, detention, reports and courts. The correct source depends on the booking and custody system.
How often is the Fulton County inmate search updated?
Fulton County Sheriff’s Office currently states that its public inmate database is updated once per day. A very recent booking may therefore not appear immediately.
Can Atlanta Police Department give me a mugshot?
APD’s Open Records Unit says it does not provide mugshots or jail-status information. Use the responsible jail or sheriff for booking-photo requests.
How do I request a Fulton County booking photo?
Use the Fulton County Sheriff’s open-record process. The Sheriff’s current instructions say that a booking-photo request must include the agency’s booking-photo release affirmation form.
How do I find someone in the Atlanta City Detention Center?
The City of Atlanta advises contacting the detention center with the detainee’s name and date of birth. If the person is not in the city’s system, another facility may be responsible.
Where do I get an Atlanta Police incident report?
For a single APD report, start with the Central Records Unit at 3493 Donald Lee Hollowell Pkwy NW. Customized or broader requests can be submitted through the APD Open Records Unit.
Where can I check an Atlanta criminal court case?
Use the court that has jurisdiction over the case. Fulton County provides Magistrate/State and Superior Court record searches, DeKalb provides its county judicial-system search, and the Municipal Court of Atlanta provides a Find My Case service for matters within its jurisdiction.
Where do I search if the person went to Georgia state prison?
Use the Georgia Department of Corrections Find an Offender service. A person transferred into state custody may no longer be best located through the original county jail search.
Does a mugshot mean the person was convicted?
No. A mugshot documents a booking or detention event. The court record should be checked for filed charges and the final case disposition.
