Find Charlotte and Mecklenburg County Mugshots, Arrests and Booking Records
For a Charlotte or Mecklenburg County arrest, start with the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office Arrest Inquiry. Use the separate Inmate Inquiry when you need current or recent detention information, then move to North Carolina eCourts or the Mecklenburg County Clerk of Superior Court when you need the criminal case or disposition.

A booking photo, arrest entry or criminal charge is not a conviction. MCSO specifically warns users not to confuse criminal charges with criminal convictions, and custody, bond and charges can change after booking.
Which Charlotte or Mecklenburg County Record Answers Your Question?
“Charlotte Mecklenburg County mugshots” can describe several different tasks. Arrest Inquiry is best for county arrest and booking information; Inmate Inquiry is custody-focused; CMPD handles its own police incident reports; and court systems answer what happened after the arrest.
Was the person arrested in Mecklenburg County?
Search MCSO Arrest Inquiry. The current interface accepts last name, first name, arrest date, PID or arrest number and provides arrest information from the county’s online search window.
MCSO Arrest Inquiry →Is the person currently or recently detained?
Use Inmate Inquiry. It can be searched by name, PID, JID, active-inmate status and prisoner type.
MCSO Inmate Inquiry →Need the CMPD incident report?
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Records handles incident reports. CMPD states that incident reports are available at no charge.
CMPD Records →Need filed charges, hearings or disposition?
Use North Carolina eCourts for publicly available case information and the Mecklenburg County Clerk when you need official or certified records.
Mecklenburg court services →Need a certified Mecklenburg criminal-record search?
The Clerk of Superior Court provides a certified name-based single-county criminal-record search using Form AOC-CR-314.
NC criminal background checks →Has the person moved into NC prison or supervision?
Use the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction Offender Locator for state prison offenders, probationers and parolees. The state says this database does not include county jail information.
NC Offender Search →How to Search Mecklenburg County Arrest Inquiry
The Sheriff’s current arrest system is the main county source when you are looking for an arrest record or booking photo rather than only current detention status.
Open the official MCSO Arrest Inquiry
Begin with the county-hosted search rather than a paid mugshot or people-search website.
Choose one strong search method
The current search offers last name, first name, arrest date, PID and arrest number. MCSO warns that entering too many criteria can prevent a search—for example, using a name and arrest number together may be too restrictive.
Start broad and narrow only when necessary
If you know only a name, begin there. If the result set is too large, add an arrest date or use a known identifier instead of guessing at extra personal details.
Verify the person before relying on the record
Compare the available arrest date, PID, date of birth and other identifying information. A same-name result alone is not enough to establish identity.
Move to Inmate Inquiry when custody is the question
An arrest record can remain available when a person is no longer detained. Use the separate inmate system to answer whether someone is currently or recently in jail.
How Mecklenburg County Inmate Inquiry Works
MCSO’s Inmate Inquiry is the better tool when your main question is current or recent detention. Its FAQ says inmate information operates in “Real Time” mode, meaning record changes are displayed on the web when they are entered into the system.
Search options
- First and last name
- PID
- JID
- Active inmates only
- Custody/prisoner type
MCSO says at least one letter of the first name is required when searching by name.
PID versus JID
PID means Positive Identification Number. MCSO describes it as a fingerprint-based identifier that stays with a person across jail stays.
JID means Jail Identification Number. It is assigned for a particular booking or jail stay and changes with a new stay.
| Field | What it helps identify | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| PID | Fingerprint-based person identifier | Identifies a person in MCSO records, not the final court outcome. |
| JID | A particular jail stay | Changes with a new booking. |
| Charge | Allegation/process attached to custody | Does not by itself establish conviction. |
| Bond | Current recorded bond information | Can change after court action. |
| Court date | Scheduled court event when available | Verify the current court schedule in eCourts or with the Clerk. |
Finding Recent Charlotte and Mecklenburg County Bookings
Use Arrest Inquiry for arrests within MCSO’s published online window and Inmate Inquiry when you need current custody. Do not describe either system as a permanent historical mugshot archive.
| What you need | Best source | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Recent Mecklenburg County arrest | MCSO Arrest Inquiry | Search name, arrest date, PID or arrest number. |
| Person may be in jail now | MCSO Inmate Inquiry | Use the active-inmate option or identifying information. |
| Person was released | Arrest Inquiry + eCourts | Follow the criminal case rather than relying on current custody. |
| Need CMPD incident narrative | CMPD Records | Request the incident report from the police agency. |
| Person later entered state prison/supervision | NC DAC Offender Locator | Search state custody or supervision separately from county jail data. |
How Mecklenburg County Booking Records Are Created
The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office says its Arrest Processing Center is the centralized entry point for people arrested in Mecklenburg County by any law-enforcement agency. That distinction matters because CMPD or another agency may make the arrest while MCSO handles county booking and detention processing.
Arrest Processing Center
801 East Fourth StreetCharlotte, NC 28202
Arrest Processing: 980-314-5100
MCSO says Arrest Processing operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week and uses electronic fingerprinting and digital mugshot equipment.
Records and Release
MCSO says its Records and Release staff enter demographic, charge and bond information into the Offender Management System and update charge or bond details when court action changes the record.
That is why an initial booking result should not be treated as a permanently fixed version of the case.
Where to Check Mecklenburg County Bond and Custody Information
For general inmate information, including how to pay a bond, MCSO directs callers to its main information line. For information about a specific detention resident, the Sheriff’s Office also provides VINE.
MCSO information line
Phone: 704-336-8100
Use this route for general detention information and official guidance about paying bond.
VINE victim notification
Phone: 1-800-247-9658
MCSO says VINE can provide custody status and lets crime victims register for automatic release or transfer notifications involving a specific detention resident.
CMPD Incident Reports Are Different From MCSO Booking Records
If Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police handled the incident, CMPD Records is the place to obtain the police report. The jail and booking record remains a separate Sheriff’s Office record.
Incident reports
CMPD says incident reports are available at no charge. A person who filed an incident report can obtain a copy through CMPD’s records options.

- Visit Police Headquarters or a CMPD division office.

Use North Carolina eCourts to Follow the Case After Arrest
Mecklenburg County’s court system is the appropriate follow-up when you need case events, hearings or disposition rather than only the arrest and jail record.
Mecklenburg County eCourts access
The North Carolina Judicial Branch says public case information is available through eCourts Portal. Mecklenburg County entered the eCourts system in October 2023.
Portal provides online public case information, but an online docket view is not a substitute for an official certified court record when certification is required.

Certified Mecklenburg Criminal Record vs. Your Statewide NC Record
North Carolina provides different record-review processes depending on whether you need a certified court search for one county or a fingerprint-based review of your own state criminal-history record.
| Service | Coverage | Current published fee | Important detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clerk certified criminal-record search | One county | $25 | Name-based search through the Clerk of Superior Court using AOC-CR-314. |
| Courthouse public-access computer | County or statewide public court records | No charge for self-service search | Non-certified search available at courthouse public-access computers. |
| NC SBI Right to Review | Your own NC criminal-history record | $14 | Fingerprint-based personal review; not an unrestricted search of another person. |
Certified single-county search
The Judicial Branch currently lists a $25 fee for a certified name-based criminal record search through the Clerk of Superior Court.
For mailed requests, money order or certified check is accepted; personal checks are not accepted. In-person payment options include credit card, cash, money order or certified check.
Your own statewide NC record
The NC State Bureau of Investigation offers a fingerprint-based “Right to Review” of your own North Carolina criminal-history information.
SBI currently publishes a $14 fee and says money order or certified check is accepted. Processing can take up to 20 business days after receipt.

How to Request Information From the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office
MCSO’s Public Information Manager publishes a specific request process for information that is not resolved by the public inquiry tools.
Open the MCSO Public Information request page
The Sheriff’s Office requires requests to be submitted using its provided Public Information Request form.
Complete all required fields accurately
Describe the requested information clearly and include useful identifiers such as the person’s name, date or case/arrest information when available.
Submit through the Sheriff’s published route
MCSO instructs requesters to return the completed form to its Public Information Office using the contact information shown on the official page.
Wait for the agency’s response
The records custodian determines what can be released. Do not assume every law-enforcement record, photograph or investigative detail is publicly releasable.

Use NC Adult Correction for State Prison, Probation or Parole
The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction Offender Locator is a separate statewide system for state prison offenders, probationers and parolees.
What the state search covers
NCDAC says the database contains current offender information plus historical information dating back to 1972 for state correction and supervision records.
What it does not cover
NCDAC explicitly says its Offender Locator does not contain county jail information. For a current Mecklenburg County detention resident, continue to use MCSO.
Can’t Find a Charlotte Mecklenburg Mugshot or Inmate Record?
A missing result does not automatically mean no arrest occurred. Check whether you are using the system that matches the stage of the case.
Search returns an error
MCSO’s Arrest Inquiry warns against entering too much search data at once. Remove extra criteria and retry with a name, identifier or date.
The person may have been released
An arrest record can remain even when active custody ends. Check Arrest Inquiry and the court record rather than only the active inmate list.
The person may have moved into NC custody
Search NCDAC when someone has entered state prison, probation or parole rather than Mecklenburg County detention.
The MCSO portal will not load
MCSO says some local network firewalls can interfere with its inquiry applications. Try another permitted network or contact the Sheriff’s Office rather than assuming the record is unavailable.
The online record may have been removed
MCSO says inquiry information can be removed before the normal three-year window when the Sheriff’s Office receives an Order of Expunction signed by a judge.
You may need CMPD or another police agency
MCSO handles county booking and detention, but the incident report belongs to the law-enforcement agency that created it.
An Arrest or Charlotte Mugshot Does Not Establish Guilt
Arrest and booking information describes an early stage of the criminal process. Charges may later change, be dismissed or result in a disposition that cannot be determined from the booking photo alone.
USA-Mugshots.com is an independent public-record navigation guide. It is not affiliated with the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, North Carolina Judicial Branch or NC Department of Adult Correction.
