West Virginia mugshots and inmate records
Find a person in a WV regional jail, check new bookings, confirm a state-prison transfer, or look up a court case—using the correct government system for each step.
Records Search
Court, Criminal, Marriage, Divorce, Property
To find West Virginia mugshots and inmate records, start with the West Virginia Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation (WV DCR) Offender Search. Select Offender Search (Jails) to look up a person, Daily Incarcerations for recent regional-jail admissions, or Offender Search (Prisons) if the person has moved into state-prison custody.
West Virginia uses centralized regional-jail search services rather than a different name-search portal for each of its 55 counties. A booking photograph may appear when the official system makes one available, but a listing is not a complete criminal history or proof of a conviction.
Which official West Virginia search do you need?
People often use “WV mugshots,” “regional jail inmate search” and “recent arrests” interchangeably. Those questions lead to different government records, and selecting the wrong tool can make a valid record look missing.
| Your question | Official starting point | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Is a named person in a WV regional jail? | Offender Search (Jails) | A result may change after release or transfer. |
| Who was recently admitted to jail? | Daily Incarcerations | An admission is not proof of current custody. |
| Was the person transferred into state prison? | Offender Search (Prisons) | This is separate from the regional-jail search. |
| What happened in a magistrate case? | Magistrate Record Search | Public case information, not downloadable court documents. |
| What happened in circuit court? | WV Judiciary Court Record Access | A separate statewide circuit-court search. |
| Need an incident report or nonpublic photo? | The arresting police agency or the agency holding the requested record | Not every record or photograph is publicly releasable. |
About the WVRJA name: The former West Virginia Regional Jail and Correctional Facility Authority was consolidated into WV DCR on July 1, 2018. You may still see “WVRJA” in older search names and URLs, including the state-run OIS application. Current instructions and facility information should be checked through WV DCR. Our WVRJA mugshots guide explains the legacy name and current agency.
How to find a WV regional jail inmate by name
The state’s jail offender search is the best place to begin when you already know whom you are searching for. Prepare the person’s legal surname and, if known, first name. A booking number or other identifiers from an existing official record can help you distinguish similar names.
- Open the state search menu.
Visit WV DCR Offender Search and select “Offender Search (Jails).” The state may redirect you to its WV.gov Offender Information System (OIS).
- Enter the surname.
The regional-jail lookup asks for at least the first three letters of the last name. Add the first name when available and complete any required verification challenge.
- Review possible matches.
Do not assume the first result is correct. Check available identifying details and the facility name. If the portal shows a booking photo, treat it as supporting information, not conclusive identification.
- Read the available custody fields.
Look for the institution, booking or admission information, charges as displayed, and any other public record identifiers. These fields describe a particular system update and may change.
- Confirm anything time-sensitive.
For urgent release, transport, visitation or location questions, use the facility’s published contact information rather than relying on an older screenshot or copied listing.
- Move to the court when you need an outcome.
If you need filed charges, hearing information or a disposition, search the county’s magistrate or circuit court record rather than treating the jail entry as a final legal record.
Search-system tip: Some WV.gov tools require a CAPTCHA, accepted disclaimer or an active browsing session. If a direct link gives an error, return to the official DCR search menu and follow its current link. This is not evidence that an inmate record does not exist.
How to check recent WV mugshots and daily incarcerations
For a recent arrest, the state’s Daily Incarcerations system is a more appropriate starting point than searching a random third-party mugshot gallery. It provides dated admission information organized through the regional-jail system.
Check admissions by county or institution
Open Daily Incarcerations from the DCR search menu. Choose the date, county or institution options the live page provides. If you know the jail’s name, use the institution view; if you know the county where the arrest was processed, begin with the county view. Follow the portal’s active terms and verify each record before using it.
Do not confuse admission and ongoing custody
A person can be admitted to a regional jail and later released, transferred or taken elsewhere. An entry in a daily report may remain associated with that admission even after the person’s current status changes. To know whether the person remains in jail, check the name-based offender search and contact the institution where necessary.
What about the last 24 hours, seven days or 30 days?
WV DCR’s public search options determine which dates you can view. Do not assume there is a dedicated “last 24 hours” or 30-day photo archive. For older events, look for a court record or submit a request to the actual records custodian. See our recent booking and mugshot guide for how dated reports differ from live custody lists.
Photo availability: Where the official portal displays a booking image, the photo reflects a particular intake or custody event. Photos can be missing, restricted or no longer shown. Never treat the absence of a picture as proof that no booking occurred.
Which regional jail serves your West Virginia county?
WV DCR lists ten regional jails. Its official facility pages identify the counties each jail serves, the facility’s address and its public phone number. These are routing guides rather than guarantees of where a specific person is housed: transfer or other custody arrangements can change a person’s location.
| Regional jail | Location | Counties served | Main phone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Central Regional Jail (CRJ) | Sutton / Flatwoods | Braxton, Calhoun, Clay, Gilmer, Lewis, Nicholas, Roane, Webster | 304-765-7904 |
| Eastern Regional Jail (ERJ) | Martinsburg | Berkeley, Jefferson, Morgan | 304-267-0045 |
| North Central Regional Jail (NCRJ) | Greenwood | Doddridge, Harrison, Marion, Monongalia, Pleasants, Ritchie, Wirt, Wood | 304-873-1384 |
| Northern Regional Jail (NRJ) | Moundsville | Brooke, Hancock, Marshall, Ohio, Tyler, Wetzel | 304-843-4067 |
| Potomac Highlands Regional Jail (PHRJ) | Augusta | Grant, Hampshire, Hardy, Mineral, Pendleton | 304-496-1275 |
| South Central Regional Jail (SCRJ) | Charleston | Jackson, Kanawha | 304-558-1336 |
| Southern Regional Jail (SRJ) | Beaver | Fayette, Greenbrier, Mercer, Monroe, Raleigh, Summers, Wyoming | 304-256-6726 |
| Southwestern Regional Jail (SWRJ) | Holden | Boone, Logan, McDowell, Mingo | 304-239-3032 |
| Tygart Valley Regional Jail (TVRJ) | Belington | Barbour, Pocahontas, Preston, Randolph, Taylor, Tucker, Upshur | 304-637-0382 |
| Western Regional Jail (WRJ) | Barboursville | Cabell, Lincoln, Mason, Putnam, Wayne | 304-733-6821 |
Important distinction: Southern Regional Jail (SRJ) is in Beaver and serves Raleigh and nearby southeastern counties. Southwestern Regional Jail (SWRJ) is in Holden and serves Logan and nearby southwestern counties. Their similar names do not refer to the same facility. Our SRJ inmate search guide covers Southern Regional Jail specifically.
Open WV DCR Adult Facilities for the full official list, including state prisons, correctional centers and regional jails. For visits, mail or video calls, consult the specific facility page; schedules, security rules and mailing addresses can differ from the public street address.
Find the WV court case, not just the arrest photograph
An arrest photo or jail booking record is not a court judgment. Charges can be amended, dismissed or resolved after a person is booked. West Virginia offers public statewide searches for both magistrate and circuit courts, covering all 55 counties.
Magistrate Record Search — often the first criminal case stage
Go to MCRSearch.courtswv.gov. The Judiciary says the free system allows a first-name, last-name or case-number search and returns up to 30 records. Results can help you identify the county, case details and possible next steps. Actual magistrate court documents are not provided through that online lookup. Contact the clerk of the county where the case was filed for documents; statutory copy fees may apply.
Circuit Court — felony cases and other circuit matters
West Virginia’s Court Record Access page links to its statewide circuit-court search, known as WVPASS. This can be the next stop for felony proceedings, later court filings or matters beyond the magistrate stage. Registration and document-access rules may apply; follow the current portal instructions.
Keep three identifiers distinct
- Booking numberAn identifier assigned to a jail record. It is not automatically the criminal court case number.
- Case numberAssigned by the court for a proceeding. Use it to request the court file.
- Arrest or incident numberMay be created by the sheriff or police department that investigated the event.
If a name search returns more than one person, compare the county, case number and available identifying information. An allegation shown on an old jail page must not be reported as a final conviction.
Request a WV booking photo or public record that is not online
Not every booking image or police narrative is displayed in an online offender search. The agency holding the requested item matters: WV DCR may maintain jail custody records, while the arresting sheriff, city police or West Virginia State Police may maintain an incident report. The court clerk is responsible for court-file copies.
- Identify the right custodian.
Write down the county, arresting agency, facility, person’s name, approximate date and any existing booking or case number. Decide whether you want a booking photograph, jail intake record, police report or court document.
- Check public availability first.
Try the WV DCR search menu and relevant court system. If the photograph or record is not displayed, find the records-request instructions of the agency that actually holds it.
- Make a specific written request when appropriate.
West Virginia Code §29B-1-3 requires requests to identify the requested records with reasonable specificity and to be directed to the custodian. WV DCR publishes a FOIA-request policy in its official policies index.
- Understand the response period.
Under §29B-1-3, the custodian generally must provide the records, specify an inspection opportunity or issue a written denial as soon as practicable, within five days excluding Saturdays, Sundays and legal holidays, unless another statute provides otherwise. This is a response requirement, not a promise that every requested photo will be released.
- Review any denial or copy cost.
The statute allows reasonable fees for actual reproduction costs and sets out a way to challenge a denial. Privacy, investigations and other statutory exceptions may limit disclosure. Follow agency instructions and seek qualified legal guidance if the dispute matters.
No photo does not always mean no record. The state might display custody data without an image; an existing image may not be available for public release. West Virginia’s FOIA law is a state law and is distinct from the federal Freedom of Information Act.
Use West Virginia VINE for custody-status alerts
If you need a notification about a qualifying offender’s custody status instead of repeatedly refreshing an old mugshot page, check the state-operated Victim Information and Notification Everyday (VINE) information. WV DCR lists 1-866-WV4-VINE for phone custody inquiries and registration, and directs users to VINELink for email notifications.
WV DCR cautions that VINE does not issue a phone notification while an offender is being transferred; notification resumes once the offender arrives at the next facility. For victims seeking formal parole-hearing or release notifications, the state explains that written notification requests to DCR and the West Virginia Parole Board are separate procedures.
VINE is useful for status alerts where available, but neither a notification service nor an online mugshot proves the current status at the exact moment you check. Contact the responsible agency for urgent safety matters.
Why a West Virginia inmate search may show no result
- Wrong spellingTry an accurate partial surname permitted by the official tool, and check other identifying fields. Do not assume all similar names refer to one person.
- Recent intakeThe jail may not yet have processed the entry or updated the public system. Check again through DCR or contact the facility if necessary.
- Release or transferCurrent jail results can change after release or movement. Search the state prison option when appropriate and review the court record.
- Wrong institutionOne county may have a usual regional jail, but the person may be at another facility. Confirm the institution actually shown by DCR.
- Online search blockedAn expired session, CAPTCHA or temporary access error is a technical issue—not a confirmed no-match result. Re-enter through the DCR homepage.
- Older arrestThe jail search is not a permanent statewide arrest archive. Look for a court case or contact the actual custodian of a historical report.
- Privacy restrictionSome juvenile, sealed, confidential or otherwise protected records may not be publicly listed or released.
- Wrong databaseA federal detainee, county police arrest or court filing may not appear in the particular state jail search you used.
For a missed match, keep the searches separate: start with DCR jail custody, check Daily Incarcerations if it was a new booking, try DCR prison records if custody may have changed, and consult court records for the legal proceedings. Never conclude “not arrested” or “released” based solely on an empty search result.
Five West Virginia record terms explained
Knowing which record is being displayed helps prevent a name match or a single photograph from becoming a mistaken claim about someone’s legal status.
- Booking photographA photograph taken during the jail intake process. Public access depends on what the agency releases.
- Daily IncarcerationsWV DCR’s dated regional-jail admission search. It is not a permanent list of everyone still in custody.
- Jail offender searchThe state OIS lookup used to search an individual connected with the regional-jail system.
- Prison offender searchA separate WV DCR search for people in the state prison system rather than the current regional-jail lookup.
- Court dispositionThe outcome recorded in the criminal court proceeding; the original jail charge may be different.
West Virginia mugshot and inmate search FAQs
Where is the official WV mugshots inmate search?
Start with WV DCR Offender Search. Choose the jail search for a named regional-jail inmate or Daily Incarcerations for recent admissions. Photos appear only if made available by the public search.
Are WVRJA and WV DCR the same agency?
WVRJA refers to the former Regional Jail and Correctional Facility Authority. West Virginia consolidated its corrections agencies under the Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation effective July 1, 2018. Some old names remain in search-system URLs.
Can I find today’s WV regional jail bookings?
Use WV DCR Daily Incarcerations and the date or institution options shown by the current system. New entries and status changes may take time to appear.
Does the WV jail offender search require a full name?
The jail search instructs users to enter at least the first three letters of a last name. A first name or other available identifiers can help narrow results.
Why are no mugshots displayed for an inmate?
Some public records display custody information without a booking image, and release can be limited by agency rules or legal exemptions. The photo’s absence does not prove the booking never occurred.
Can I search West Virginia inmates by county?
Daily Incarcerations provides county or institution admission views when offered by the live page. For a named person, use the statewide jail offender lookup and check the institution listed in the result.
How do I know whether an inmate was released?
Check the latest official custody record and, for time-sensitive matters, contact the facility. An old daily booking entry or cached mugshot does not verify current status.
Is Southern Regional Jail the same as Southwestern Regional Jail?
No. Southern Regional Jail is in Beaver, Raleigh County. Southwestern Regional Jail is in Holden, Logan County. They are separate WV DCR facilities.
Can I search West Virginia prison inmates with the jail search?
WV DCR offers a separate Offender Search (Prisons). Use that route when someone may have been transferred from a regional jail into the state-prison system.
Where can I see WV criminal charges and court outcomes?
Use the free statewide Magistrate Record Search or the Judiciary’s circuit-court access route. Contact the clerk for copies or official case confirmation.
Is the West Virginia jail search free?
State public name-search and magistrate case-search tools can be used without paying a private mugshot site. Copying official documents, obtaining certified records or certain court downloads may involve fees.
How can I request an older WV booking photo?
Identify the agency that holds the photograph, then use its official public-records request process. A specific written request under West Virginia law may be appropriate; statutory exceptions can restrict access.
