Search Topeka bookings at the correct county source
Looking for a Shawnee County mugshot, a Topeka arrest, or someone in the county jail? The Shawnee County Department of Corrections provides the official inmate search and daily booking reports. Police reports and court outcomes require separate offices.
Records Search
Court, Criminal, Marriage, Divorce, Property
Topeka is in Shawnee County, but the Topeka Police Department, Shawnee County Sheriff, Shawnee County Department of Corrections, and local courts maintain different records. The office that arrested someone is not necessarily the agency that holds their booking photograph or subsequent court file.
For a current jail search, start with Shawnee County Corrections’ inmate portal. To review recent bookings, accept its terms and select the separate Daily Booking Report or Daily Booking Archive. Neither is a guaranteed 30-day mugshot gallery.
Which Shawnee County search answers your question?
There is no one search covering all Topeka mugshots, arrests, jail custody and criminal case outcomes. Use this comparison before entering a person’s name.
| What you need | Where to go | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| Current inmate or custody status | Shawnee County DOC Inmate Search | Does not list everyone arrested or released historically. |
| New booking or available mugshot | DOC Daily Booking Report | Not a live, minute-by-minute arrest feed. |
| Booking on an earlier recent day | DOC Daily Booking Archive | Archive dates and photo availability can vary. |
| Topeka Police incident report | Topeka Police records process | A police narrative is not the court’s disposition. |
| Sheriff’s arrest or incident report | Shawnee County Sheriff’s Request for Records | Sheriff records are not every Topeka Police report. |
| Felony or state criminal case result | Shawnee County District Court | It is not a public jail mugshot gallery. |
| City ordinance or municipal case | Topeka Municipal Court public search | Separate from Kansas District Court cases. |
Note the geographic distinction: the City of Shawnee is in Johnson County, near Kansas City. A search for the Shawnee city police department is not a Shawnee County or Topeka inmate search.
How to search a person in the Topeka jail
The official portal’s current-custody search is labeled Updated Hourly. A person may still be absent if booking is incomplete, they were released, or they are held in another jurisdiction.
-
Open the county’s inmate search.
Go directly to the county’s official inmate-search portal, the Shawnee County Department of Corrections portal. It is not a paid people-search website.
-
Read and accept the disclaimer.
The county explains that information can include people who have not been convicted, and the displayed records are not intended for official or commercial use. Accept the terms to enable the available search and booking controls.
-
Enter a last name.
The form requires a last name. First name and birth date are optional fields that can help narrow a common-name result. Use only details you can reasonably verify.
-
Examine the matching record.
Check name, booking identifiers, relevant dates, booking agency, allegations and listed custody information. One matching name is not enough to establish identity.
-
Move to the court when the question changes.
For the status of charges, next appearance or final case result, search the appropriate court—not the jail roster.
If you need records for a person released from the Adult Detention Center, skip to the booking archive and court steps below. Searching the live roster repeatedly may not retrieve a past booking.
Shawnee County mugshots today, last 7 days and older
The county provides two functions in addition to name-based inmate search. Daily Booking Report is labeled updated daily; Daily Booking Archive lets you access earlier dated reports available in the system. Both controls may appear disabled until the portal’s terms have been accepted.
How to open the Daily Booking Report
- Open the official DOC portal.
- Read the disclaimer and select its acceptance checkbox.
- Choose Download Daily Booking Report for the latest available report.
- Check the report’s generation date/time rather than assuming a fixed daily publishing hour.
- For a previous day, return to the portal and select Daily Booking Archive, then open the appropriate available date.
Available booking entries can include name, booking number, booking date/time, release date/time, agency, charge or warrant descriptions, bond amount/type, court date/time, and a booking photo when published. An arrest date and a booking date may differ.
| Timeframe | Best route | Caution |
|---|---|---|
| Now | Current Inmate Search | Current custody only; labeled hourly. |
| Today / latest report | Daily Booking Report | Updated daily, not continuously. |
| Past few days / last 7 days | Daily Booking Archive, one date at a time | Check which dates actually appear. |
| Last 30 days | Available archive plus court or originating agency | No verified one-click 30-day gallery. |
| Older arrest / released person | District Court and police records request | Historical photograph access is not guaranteed. |
The county archive is a better source for actual dated bookings than a third-party “mugshots last 30 days” page, but it cannot guarantee that every photograph from every date remains publicly accessible.
Was the arrest made by Topeka Police or the Sheriff?
The Shawnee County Department of Corrections operates the jail. That does not make it the author of every police report. The booking record’s agency field can help identify the agency that handled the original incident.
-
Topeka Police
For an incident investigated by Topeka Police, seek the original police report through the City of Topeka’s applicable records process. A Topeka Police report does not automatically appear in the sheriff’s records request system.
-
Shawnee County Sheriff
If a sheriff’s deputy made or investigated the arrest, use the Sheriff’s official Request for Records page. The sheriff’s office publishes a form and submissions by mail, fax or email.
-
Other law enforcement
If Kansas Highway Patrol or another agency is named in the booking, follow that agency’s records procedure. A county jail booking does not mean the county sheriff created the incident report.
Topeka Municipal Court versus Shawnee County District Court
Topeka Municipal Court handles matters within its municipal jurisdiction, while the Third Judicial District handles state criminal cases in Shawnee County. Topeka’s Municipal Court Public Access provides instructions for searching by party name, full complaint/citation number or court case number. Its portal warns that recent entries may not immediately be reflected online.
In the municipal portal, use Log In for public access; for a name, choose Searches → Case Searches → By Party. For a citation, choose Searches → Citation Search and enter the complete number including letters. Use the District Court records service instead for the county’s state criminal court files.
Find the court record after a Topeka booking
A jail record may show an initial allegation or bond. It does not show whether prosecutors later changed the charge, a judge dismissed the matter, or the person was convicted or acquitted. For those answers, use the relevant court’s record.
-
Open the Shawnee County District Court records page.
The Third Judicial District’s official Records page links to Kansas District Court Case Search and provides in-person access information.
-
Search with a case number when available.
Otherwise use the person’s name and check court location, case type and identifying details to avoid confusing people with similar names.
-
Review available docket events and documents.
Look for filing dates, hearings, amended charges and the disposition. Not every document will necessarily be available remotely.
-
Request copies from the clerk if needed.
Use the court’s posted KORA form and records instructions, or visit the public access terminals outside the Clerk’s Office in the courthouse.
The court lists digital criminal records from 2004 to the present and microfilm for 1885–2003. It lists $0.50 per document on its imaging system and $0.50 per page on older microfilm. Mailed requests usually require prepayment of a $20 research-and-copy fee, with other charges possible depending on the request. Check the court’s current fees and form.
The District Attorney’s court-process guide says first appearance normally occurs on the first business day after arrest. At that hearing, the court addresses charges, rights, possible release terms and attorney-appointment eligibility. It does not establish one guaranteed hearing time for every defendant.
Bond, visitation and custody notifications
Confirm the bond before paying
Shawnee County DOC explains different bond types. For a CA cash bond the full amount is paid in cash at the Adult Detention Center booking-area public window. A PS professional-surety bond requires a bondsman. For ORC, ORCD or CS types, the county describes a ten-percent cash deposit at that window. WS (with surety) arrangements depend on the judge’s requirements. Read the official bond FAQ and call Corrections at 785-251-5000 to confirm the current record and accepted payment method before traveling.
Visitation uses the current DOC instructions
The county reports that Smart Communications became its visitation/communications vendor on January 21, 2025. The adult visitation page directs visitors to the Department of Corrections homepage for current scheduling. Remote visitation and kiosk-based scheduling are described there. Do not rely on a fixed visiting calendar copied from an older jail listing. The official visitation rules include clothing restrictions.
Kansas VINE notifications
If you need to monitor a known person’s custody change for safety reasons, the county inmate portal links to Kansas VINE and lists 866-574-8463 for custody-status information and victim notifications. VINE is not an emergency-alert replacement; use 911 for an immediate threat.
Kansas state custody after transfer
For a person transferred into state corrections, follow the Kansas Department of Corrections KASPER guidance. That system covers certain people sentenced to state correctional custody from 1980 onward, and KDOC explains that its public information is updated daily excluding weekends. It is not the county roster or a comprehensive Kansas criminal-history check.
How to request a Topeka arrest report or missing mugshot
When the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office created the record
Open the Sheriff’s Request for Records page and download the linked current form. The sheriff asks for a case number when known, incident type, date/time/location, responding agency, description of records sought and the purpose of the request. Mail it to 320 S. Kansas Avenue, Suite 200, Topeka, KS 66603, or use the fax/email options shown on the official form page. Records fax: 785-251-2344; main office: 785-251-2200.
When the record belongs to a city or another agency
Request it from that specific custodian. Topeka Police arrest/incident records, sheriff reports, jail booking photographs and court files are not interchangeable. A public request can be restricted or redacted, and the agency may not hold the exact item sought.
How Kansas public-record requests work
Shawnee County’s Kansas Open Records Act instructions explain that the agency generally must act on a request within three business days, which may mean fulfilling it, acknowledging it with more information, or explaining why it cannot be provided. That is not a promise of complete delivery within three days. KORA requires access to existing public records subject to exemptions; it does not oblige an agency to create new custom reports.
For the county clerk’s routine KORA copies, the published rate includes $0.25 per standard photocopy plus potentially staff-time charges. Court, jail and police records may follow their respective fee policies. Confirm the custodian and item before paying.
KBI criminal-history search is different
For a formal statewide Kansas criminal-history check, use the KBI/Kansas.gov Criminal History Record Search. It currently lists $30 per public name-based search and requires a KanAccess account. Its published operating window is 4 a.m. to midnight Central Time, with scheduled maintenance overnight. A fingerprint-based check provides stronger identity matching and has a different application route. A KBI search does not promise a Shawnee County mugshot.
| Service | Published amount | Important detail |
|---|---|---|
| County jail inmate search | Free public portal access | Acceptance of portal terms required. |
| KBI online name-based history | $30 per person | Separate statewide record system. |
| District Court imaging copies | $0.50 per document | Court may assess additional fees. |
| DOC printed inmate photograph | $5 on DOC service fee schedule | Does not guarantee public release of any requested photo. |
| DOC booking/processing fee | $45 for qualifying fingerprinted inmates | An inmate charge, not a public search fee. |
The DOC fee schedule allows a request for refund of a paid booking/processing fee within 30 days after an acquittal, no charges being filed, or dismissal of all charges, using the county’s Booking Fee Reimbursement Form. This is separate from requests to remove or correct a public arrest record.

No Topeka mugshot or inmate match? Try this order
-
Booked recently
Use the current-custody search first. The daily report is updated less frequently and may not yet show a new intake.
-
Already released
Check the available Daily Booking Archive and then court records. The inmate name search is limited to current custody.
-
Different spelling
Use the correct legal surname and other reliable identifiers. Do not equate a matching name or photograph with a confirmed identity.
-
Booked elsewhere
Identify which agency and detention center handled the arrest. A Topeka incident does not guarantee booking in this specific facility.
-
Transferred to state custody
Check KDOC KASPER when that custody category actually applies.
-
Case is sealed or protected
Some criminal, juvenile or expunged records will not be available through public portals. Use the court’s lawful access process.
-
Records are inaccurate
The DOC portal provides a written accuracy-complaint route to its public information contact at 501 SE 8th Street, Topeka, KS 66607. For a police report or court docket error, contact the originating agency or court instead.
Important: Never use a mugshot or arrest listing as proof of wrongdoing, for harassment, or as a substitute for a legally compliant background-check process in employment, housing or credit decisions.
Shawnee County mugshots and Topeka arrest FAQs
Where do I find Shawnee County mugshots in Topeka?
Start with the official Shawnee County Department of Corrections inmate portal at docis.sncoapps.us/Inmate/. Accept its terms, then search current inmates or open its Daily Booking Report and Daily Booking Archive. Photos appear only where available.
How often is the Shawnee County inmate search updated?
The county labels the current-custody search “Updated Hourly.” That does not mean every booking or custody change appears immediately.
Can I see Topeka bookings from the past seven days?
Use Daily Booking Archive in the official corrections portal and open each available date. A single seven-day filter or guaranteed seven-day photo collection is not promised.
Is there an official last-30-days mugshot search?
No verified single combined 30-day gallery is provided by the county. Use available archived daily reports, then search court and arresting-agency records as needed.
Who operates Shawnee County jail?
The Shawnee County Department of Corrections runs the Adult Detention Center and Corrections Annex. The sheriff’s office is a separate law-enforcement agency.
Where is the Shawnee County Adult Detention Center?
501 SE 8th Avenue, Topeka, Kansas 66607. The main DOC telephone number is 785-251-5000.
Can I find an inmate after release?
The live roster covers current custody. Check the dated booking archive, arresting agency and court; records may not remain available for every date or person.
Can I use the Shawnee County Sheriff’s website to get a Topeka Police report?
Not automatically. Request an incident report from the agency that created it. Sheriff’s reports use the Sheriff’s records process; Topeka Police reports require the City of Topeka’s applicable records route.
Does Topeka Municipal Court show state felony cases?
For state criminal matters in Shawnee County, use Kansas District Court and the Third Judicial District. Topeka Municipal Court is a different court system for municipal matters.
Does a mugshot or booking charge mean conviction?
No. The county explicitly notes its records include people accused but not convicted. Check the court for later charges and final case outcomes.
How can I find someone’s Kansas statewide criminal history?
Use the Kansas.gov KBI Criminal History Record Search, which currently lists a $30 public name-based check. It is separate from the free county custody search and may not include a booking photograph.
What does a Shawnee County jail photograph cost?
The DOC’s service fee schedule lists a $5 printed inmate photograph charge, but that fee does not mean any person may order any booking photo. Publication and disclosure remain subject to the agency’s rules and law.
How can I request a correction to an inaccurate county booking record?
Use the written accuracy-complaint contact provided on the official DOC inmate portal. Errors in a police report or court record should be raised with the agency or court that maintains that record.
