Find an SCDC Inmate, Photo and Current Prison Location
If you are searching for an SCDC inmate mugshot, prison location, sentence information or current South Carolina state-prison record, start with the South Carolina Department of Corrections. The official SCDC inmate search displays photographs and public information for people currently sentenced to and incarcerated in SCDC custody.

Use the Right South Carolina Inmate Search First
The most common reason an SCDC search fails is that the person is still in county custody, has already been released, or is under probation or parole supervision rather than physically incarcerated in an SCDC prison.
| What you are trying to find | Correct starting point | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Current sentenced state-prison inmate | SCDC Incarcerated Inmate Search | People currently sentenced to and incarcerated in SCDC |
| Recent arrest or county-jail booking | County sheriff or detention center | Local bookings, current jail custody, charges and sometimes bond |
| Former SCDC inmate | SCDC Released Inmate Search | Released inmates searched by release-date range and county |
| Probation or parole supervision | South Carolina DPPPS Offender Search | People currently represented in the supervision database |
| Custody-status notification | SC VINE | Custody and qualifying supervision information and notifications |
| Federal prisoner | Federal Bureau of Prisons | Federal correctional custody |
SCDC specifically excludes released offenders, people sentenced to county detention facilities, people under parole, probation or other community supervision, juvenile offenders housed by the agency, and current SCDC fugitives from its standard incarcerated-inmate search.
How to Run an SCDC Inmate Search
- Open the official SCDC inmate-search page. Read the agency disclaimer, then continue to the incarcerated-inmate search.
- Use an identification number when possible. The search accepts an SCDC ID or State Identification number (SID). These are usually more precise than a common name.
- If you do not know the number, search by name. Enter the last name and first name. If the first name is uncertain, SCDC allows a broader name search.
- Try phonetic matching for uncertain spelling. The official system has a phonetic-match option that can return names sounding similar to the name entered.
- Open the correct result. Compare identifying details before relying on a match. Selecting a record opens an Inmate Search Detail Report, normally as a PDF in a new browser window.
What Information Can an SCDC Inmate Record Contain?
The public search is designed to identify a current SCDC inmate and provide public correctional information. SCDC’s inmate-records policy classifies a broad range of information as public, although the online search does not necessarily display every public field on every inmate page.
Identity and photo
Public information can include the inmate photograph, full name and aliases, SCDC identification number, sex, race, physical description and SID/FBI identifiers.
Sentence and offense
Public information can include the offense, sentence length, sentence start information, committing county, date admitted to SCDC and sentence adjustments.
Release-related information
SCDC records may contain eligibility dates, parole eligibility and a projected release date. A projected date should not be treated as a guaranteed release date.
Current correctional status
Public records may include institutional assignment, transfer history, current status, detainers or holds and other qualifying correctional information.
SCDC Mugshots Are Not the Same as a County Jail Booking Search
SCDC confirms that its inmate search displays photographs for current state-prison inmates. However, someone searching for a mugshot from an arrest that happened today or recently may be looking in the wrong system.
A county jail processes the local booking. After conviction and a qualifying state-prison sentence, the person may later transfer into SCDC custody. That means the county booking record and the SCDC prison record can represent different stages of the same case.
| Record | Best for | Typical source |
|---|---|---|
| Recent booking photo | A person arrested recently | County sheriff or detention center |
| Current jail roster | Pretrial or local jail custody | County detention system |
| SCDC photograph | Current South Carolina state-prison inmate | SCDC inmate search |
| Criminal case outcome | Filed charges, hearings, disposition | South Carolina Judicial Branch / Clerk of Court |
South Carolina county jail searches
If the person has not reached state-prison custody, use the county where the arrest or detention occurred. These published guides explain several South Carolina county systems:
If you are unsure which local system applies, see the county jail inmate search and roster guide before checking unrelated databases.
Why an Inmate May Not Appear in the SCDC Search
| Possible reason | What to do next |
|---|---|
| Recently arrested | Check the county sheriff or detention center. SCDC is generally not the first system for a new local arrest. |
| Recently sentenced or transferred | Allow time for intake and record processing, then retry the SCDC search. |
| Name spelling is different | Retry the committed/legal name and use the phonetic-match option. |
| Released from SCDC | Use the separate Released Inmate Search. |
| On probation or parole | Use the South Carolina Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services offender search. |
| County detention sentence | Search the appropriate local jail instead of SCDC. |
| Juvenile record | SCDC does not publish juvenile-offender information through the standard public inmate search. |
| Current SCDC fugitive | Current fugitives are excluded from the normal incarcerated-inmate search. |
| Federal custody | Use the Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator. |
How to Search Released SCDC Inmates
The incarcerated-inmate search does not cover people who have already been released from SCDC. South Carolina provides a separate released-inmate search.
- Open the official SCDC Released Inmate Search.
- Enter a release-date range.
- Select the county.
- Use the optional sex-offender filter only when relevant.
- Run the search and review the matching records.
For probation or parole
If the person is under community supervision instead of incarcerated, use the South Carolina DPPPS Offender Search. It supports several combinations involving first name, last name, SID, county and year of birth. DPPPS states that displayed data represents the previous day.
For custody notifications
SC VINE provides offender information and qualifying status notifications across South Carolina custody systems. The statewide toll-free number is 1-866-727-2846.
Find the Prison, SCDC Number and Dorm Location
After locating the correct inmate, open the detailed report. SCDC’s family guidance says the right-hand Inmate Sentence and Location section can be used to find:
- the inmate’s SCDC number;
- the current correctional institution; and
- the dorm-room-bunk assignment.
This information is especially useful before sending mail because SCDC requires incoming inmate mail to include the inmate’s legal name, SCDC number, living unit, institution name and complete institution address.
SCDC currently operates 21 institutions across South Carolina. Once the search result gives you the institution name, use the official SCDC institutions directory to confirm the facility address, telephone number and current institution information.
Release Dates, Parole Eligibility and Sentence Calculations
An inmate record may contain projected release and parole-related information, but those dates can depend on the sentence, credits, disciplinary changes, court orders and other legal factors.
For a question about an existing inmate’s sentence calculation, SCDC directs users to its Inmate Records Office at 803-896-8531.
If you need court filings or the final criminal-case outcome rather than prison-custody information, use the South Carolina Judicial Branch records system. Jail, prison and court records answer different questions.
Need an Older or More Detailed SCDC Record?
The online inmate search is not the complete SCDC record. If public information you need is not available through the inmate locator, South Carolina’s Freedom of Information Act process may be the next step.

SCDC Inmate Search FAQs
1. Does the SCDC inmate search show mugshots?
Yes. SCDC states that its public inmate search displays photographs and public information for qualifying inmates who are currently sentenced to and incarcerated in SCDC custody.
2. Is SCDC the same as a South Carolina county jail roster?
No. SCDC is the South Carolina state-prison system. A person who was recently arrested and remains in a county detention center normally needs to be searched through the appropriate county sheriff or jail system.
3. How do I search an SCDC inmate by name?
Open the official SCDC incarcerated-inmate search, enter the person’s first and last name, and submit the search. If the spelling is uncertain, try the phonetic-match option and compare identifying details carefully.
4. What is the difference between an SCDC ID and SID?
An SCDC ID is the correctional identification number assigned within the South Carolina Department of Corrections system. SID means State Identification number. The official inmate search accepts either identifier when known.
5. Why can I not find someone in the SCDC inmate search?
The person may still be in county jail, may have been released, may be under community supervision, may have transferred recently, or the name may be entered differently. Juvenile offenders and current SCDC fugitives are also excluded from the standard search.
6. How do I find someone who was released from SCDC?
Use the separate SCDC Released Inmate Search. Enter a release-date range, select the appropriate county and use the optional sex-offender filter only when relevant.
7. Where do I search for someone on parole or probation in South Carolina?
Use the South Carolina Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services Offender Search. SCDC’s incarcerated-inmate search does not cover ordinary parole, probation or other community supervision.
8. How do I find an inmate’s prison and dorm location?
Open the inmate’s SCDC Inmate Search Detail Report and review the Inmate Sentence and Location section. SCDC says this section provides the SCDC ID, institution location and dorm-room-bunk information.
9. Can the SCDC search give an exact release date?
An inmate record may provide projected release or eligibility information, but the final date can be affected by sentence rules, credits, disciplinary action and other legal changes. For sentence-calculation questions, contact the SCDC Inmate Records Office at 803-896-8531.
10. Who should I contact about incorrect SCDC inmate information?
SCDC directs users to report inmate-search data errors or discrepancies to the Ombudsman at [email protected]. The Ombudsman telephone number listed by SCDC is 803-896-9409.
Use the SCDC Search for State Prison, Not Every South Carolina Booking
For a current state-prison inmate, the official SCDC search is the correct starting point and can provide a photograph, identity information and the inmate’s current correctional location. For a recent arrest, start with the county jail. If the person has been released, use SCDC’s released-inmate database; if the person is on probation or parole, use DPPPS.
This approach prevents the most common search mistake: looking in the right state but the wrong custody system.
