Find a Washington Inmate Through the Custody System That Actually Holds Them
Washington does not operate one public statewide jail roster containing every person held in a city jail, county jail and state prison. Use Washington Department of Corrections for current DOC incarceration, the responsible county or city jail for local custody, and WA VINE when you need custody-status notification across participating Washington correctional systems.
Records Search
Court, Criminal, Marriage, Divorce, Property
If your goal is specifically a mugshot, Washington is different from many states. State law makes the public jail register available but generally treats other jail records as confidential. Booking photographs therefore should not be assumed to be publicly available simply because an inmate or booking entry can be found.
Which Washington Inmate Search Should You Use?
The correct search depends on who currently has custody. A county jail booking, Washington DOC prison record, federal inmate record, criminal-history report and court case answer different questions.
Person is in Washington DOC custody
Use Washington DOC’s Incarcerated Search. It allows searching by first name, last name or DOC number and provides selected information about people currently incarcerated under DOC.
Washington DOC Incarcerated Search →Person was arrested locally
Search the jail authority serving the city or county where the person is held. Washington DOC is not a universal local-jail booking database.
See local jail search examples →Need notification when custody changes?
WA VINE provides custody-status information and automated notifications. Washington local jails and DOC contribute custody information to the service.
See WA VINE options →Need charges, court dates or case status?
Use Washington Courts. Jail and prison databases answer custody questions; the court system is the better route for the later criminal case.
Washington Case Search →Need Washington criminal-history information?
Use Washington State Patrol’s WATCH system rather than treating an inmate search as a statewide criminal-background search.
Washington State Patrol Criminal History →Person may be in federal prison
Use the Federal Bureau of Prisons locator when federal custody is possible. A Washington arrest location does not necessarily mean state or county custody.
Federal BOP Inmate Locator →How to Search Washington DOC Incarcerated Individuals
Washington DOC publishes selected information about people currently incarcerated under the department. The public application supports searches by DOC number or name.
Open the official DOC Incarcerated Search
Use doc.wa.gov rather than an unofficial inmate directory when your question concerns Washington state-prison custody.
Use the DOC number when available
A DOC number is more specific than a common name. The official search accepts a DOC number as well as first and last name.
Search by name when you do not know the DOC number
Enter the first and last name carefully. DOC notes that special characters other than hyphens and apostrophes cannot be used in its current search interface.
Review the current location
Public search results can include the person’s DOC number, name, age, facility location and housing assignment where published.
Use another system if the person is not in DOC custody
A missing DOC result can mean the person is in a county or city jail, federal custody, no longer incarcerated, or otherwise outside the current DOC search population.
Washington County and City Jail Rosters Are Searched Locally
Washington law requires jail authorities to maintain a public jail register, but there is no single DOC page that replaces every local jail roster. Search the county, city or regional corrections agency responsible for the person’s custody.
| Jurisdiction | Official search | Useful detail |
|---|---|---|
| King County | King County Subject Lookup | Searches adult custody and can identify facility, booking number and current custody status. |
| Snohomish County | Snohomish County Jail Register | The register includes current jail information and also covers people housed in certain participating municipal jails. |
| Pierce County | Pierce County LINX Jail Roster | Provides a current jail roster and name search; Pierce County states that released people are not included in that roster. |
| Other Washington counties | County sheriff or corrections agency | Use the jurisdiction responsible for the jail rather than assuming one of the larger county systems covers the entire state. |
Seattle and Kent adult jails
King County’s Subject Lookup can identify adults held at county detention facilities. It supports filters including name, date of birth, facility, custody status and booking information.
King County Subject Lookup →Current jail register
Snohomish County publishes its Jail Register and Bail Information page for people currently incarcerated in the county jail and participating municipal facilities.
Snohomish Jail Register →LINX current jail roster
Pierce County’s LINX system provides a current jail roster and name search. The county specifically notes that the current roster does not include people who have been released.
Pierce County LINX →Why Washington Jail Rosters Often Do Not Show Public Mugshots
Washington’s City and County Jails Act draws a distinction between the public jail register and other inmate records. This matters because someone may be publicly listed as confined without their booking photograph being publicly available.
What the public jail register must contain
RCW 70.48.100 requires a jail register open to the public. The register includes the name of each confined person, the hour, date and cause of confinement, and the hour, date and manner of discharge.
Other jail records are generally confidential
The same law states that records of a person confined in jail are generally held in confidence except for specified circumstances. Booking photographs are not listed as part of the mandatory public jail-register information.
King County expressly treats booking photos as confidential
King County’s Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention states that jail booking photos are confidential under Washington law and generally limits release to the booked person, that person’s attorney, law enforcement, the courts, or someone with the booked person’s written permission. A court order can also be relevant.
King County booking-photo guidance →Use WA VINE When You Need Custody and Release Notifications
WA VINE is useful when your real question is not “show me a mugshot” but “is this person still in custody, and can I be notified if that changes?”
Local jails and DOC contribute data
Washington’s VINE system receives information from city and county jails and the Washington Department of Corrections through agency interfaces.
Anyone can register
Washington guidance states that WA VINE is an open notification system and there is no cost to register for notifications.
Multiple delivery options
Available methods include text, email, phone, app and TTY notifications, depending on the VINE service configuration.
Washington VINE telephone access: 1-877-846-3492.
Use Washington Courts for Case Status, Not a Mugshot or Jail Roster
Washington Courts provides statewide case-index searching for municipal, district, superior and appellate courts. This is the better route when you need a criminal case rather than a current custody location.
Open Washington Courts Case Search
The state search supports case and person searches across Washington court levels.
Search by person or case information
A full name can help locate associated cases. A case number is more specific when it is available from booking paperwork or another official source.
Identify the court of record
The statewide search is an index and routing tool. It can point you toward the court responsible for the official case record.
Verify important information with the actual court
Washington Courts expressly states that its online case-search information is reference material and that the official court record is maintained by the court of record.
Use WSP WATCH for Washington Criminal-History Information
A current jail roster and a criminal-history report are not the same thing. Washington State Patrol maintains the state’s criminal-history system and provides public access through WATCH.
Immediate online search
WSP currently lists an $11 fee for an online WATCH criminal-history search. A credit or debit card can be used and the online response is returned immediately.
Open WSP WATCH →Public access is limited by law
WSP explains that public criminal-history results include conviction information, arrests less than one year old with dispositions pending, and certain registered sex or kidnapping-offender information.
Fingerprint-based searches are different
WSP also offers fingerprint-based criminal-history processing. Current fees differ from the $11 name-based online WATCH search, so check the official page before ordering.
| Source | Use it for | Do not treat it as |
|---|---|---|
| Local jail roster | Current or locally published custody and booking information. | A complete statewide criminal-history report. |
| Washington DOC | People currently incarcerated under Washington DOC. | A roster of every county and city jail inmate. |
| WA VINE | Custody-status information and notifications. | A mugshot gallery or court disposition record. |
| Washington Courts | Finding cases and locating the court of record. | A verified statewide criminal-history report. |
| WSP WATCH | Washington public criminal-history information within statutory limits. | A live jail-custody locator. |
How to Research a Former Washington Inmate or Older Booking
A person can disappear from a current jail roster after release or transfer. That does not mean the arrest or court case never existed. The next source depends on whether you need custody history, the criminal case, an agency record or criminal-history information.
Contact Washington DOC when current search is insufficient
DOC states that users may contact the department for more information concerning current and former incarcerated individuals and supervisees.
Washington DOC Search Resources →Move to the court or local jail authority
Some county rosters display only currently incarcerated people. Pierce County, for example, expressly states that released people are not included in its current jail roster.
Use WSP for statewide history questions
If the real task is determining public Washington criminal-history information rather than locating a current inmate, use WSP’s criminal-history process.
Check Federal BOP When Washington State Searches Show Nothing
Someone arrested in Washington can ultimately be held in federal custody. Washington DOC and county jail searches do not replace the Federal Bureau of Prisons Inmate Locator.
Federal Inmate Locator
Use the Bureau of Prisons locator for federal custody. Search by federal register number or by name.
Do not mix federal and Washington records
A federal inmate result does not replace Washington court, local jail or state DOC information. Use the system responsible for the custody stage or legal record you are researching.
What to Do When a Washington Inmate Search Finds Nothing
The most common problem is searching the wrong custody level. Work outward from the arrest location and current custody question instead of repeatedly searching one database.
| Problem | Possible explanation | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| No Washington DOC result | The person may be in a county or city jail, federal custody, released, or otherwise outside current DOC incarceration. | Search the responsible local jail, WA VINE, court records or federal locator as appropriate. |
| No county jail result | The person may have been released, transferred, booked into another jurisdiction or not yet reflected in the public interface. | Check another custody level and the appropriate court. |
| Jail roster shows a person but no photo | Washington law does not make booking photographs part of the mandatory public jail register. | Do not assume the photo is publicly releasable. Follow the specific jail’s records guidance. |
| Need a final case outcome | Custody databases record detention, not final adjudication. | Use the Washington court of record. |
| Need statewide criminal history | Jail and DOC searches do not provide a complete public criminal-history report. | Use Washington State Patrol WATCH. |
| Need release notification | Repeatedly checking a roster is inefficient and may miss a change. | Register with WA VINE when appropriate. |
| Several people share the same name | Name-only matching can identify the wrong person. | Compare DOC number, date of birth where available, booking number, facility or case number. |
| Person may be federally incarcerated | Federal custody is separate from Washington DOC and county jails. | Search the Federal Bureau of Prisons. |

Washington State Inmate, Jail Roster and Mugshot FAQs
Is there one statewide Washington jail roster?
No. Washington DOC provides a statewide search for people currently incarcerated under DOC, but county, city and regional jails maintain their own local jail systems. Use the authority responsible for the person’s current custody.
Where can I search Washington state-prison inmates?
Use the Washington State Department of Corrections Incarcerated Search. It supports searching by DOC number, first name or last name.
Does the Washington DOC inmate search include county jail inmates?
Not as a universal county-jail roster. Local jail custody is generally searched through the relevant county, city or regional corrections authority.
Are Washington jail mugshots public?
Do not assume they are. RCW 70.48.100 makes specified jail-register information public but generally treats other jail records as confidential. Booking photographs are not listed as part of the mandatory public jail register.
Why can I see an inmate’s name but not a booking photo?
Washington law distinguishes the public jail register from other inmate records. A jail can therefore provide public custody information without publishing a booking photograph.
Can I get a King County booking photo?
King County states that jail booking photos are confidential and generally limits release to specified recipients such as the booked person, that person’s attorney, law enforcement, courts or someone with written permission from the person. A court order may also provide a route in an appropriate case.
How can I receive notification when a Washington inmate is released?
WA VINE provides custody-status notifications. Washington guidance states that city and county jails and Washington DOC contribute custody information to the VINE system.
How do I find the court case after a Washington arrest?
Use Washington Courts Name and Case Search to identify the case and court. Important information should then be verified through the actual court of record because the statewide search is reference information rather than the official court record.
How much does a Washington State Patrol WATCH search cost?
WSP currently lists an $11 fee for an online name-based WATCH criminal-history search. Check the official WSP page before ordering because fees and procedures can change.
Does a jail booking mean someone was convicted?
No. A jail entry records confinement or booking information. It does not establish guilt or show the final court disposition.
What if the person is no longer on the jail roster?
The person may have been released, transferred or moved into another custody system. Check the appropriate court record, local jail records process, WA VINE, Washington DOC or federal locator depending on the situation.
Where should I search if the person may be in federal custody?
Use the Federal Bureau of Prisons Inmate Locator. Federal custody is separate from Washington DOC and local Washington jail systems.
